The device in the manager shows as: Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Built-in Audio
Profile: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output
I noticed that in past installs of Ubuntu, (12, 14, and 16) I noticed the sound device would be an analog device. I noticed once I updated the system, if it went to digital as shown above, the sound dies and I cannot recover.
I've installed PulseAudio, which did not help.
Anyone have any suggestions?

The device in the manager shows as: Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Built-in Audio
Profile: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output
I noticed that in past installs of Ubuntu, (12, 14, and 16) I noticed the sound device would be an analog device. I noticed once I updated the system, if it went to digital as shown above, the sound dies and I cannot recover.
I've installed PulseAudio, which did not help.
Anyone have any suggestions?
sound 17.10
I have had so many problems with sound. I have a different version than you but the steps I use to get output working again should also apply to you since theyâÂÂre just from the Ubuntu Help Wiki sound troubleshooting procedure. I just cycle through the following: 1) executing the first two commands in step 1A, 2) openingpavucontrol
from Terminal and adjusting the sliders even if they seem to be at 100% already 3) opening Settings>Sound and doing the same 4) opening alsamixer 5) repeating all steps if sound isnâÂÂt back

I know itâÂÂs kinda dumb and clunky, but I have tried a lot of different things and nothing worked. I also filed a bug since I had a fresh installation and all my sound related hardware etc was supposedly supported by my kernel version. No one could offer a better more permanent or even more specific fix.

Also IâÂÂve read that the versions of Firefox that come with 17.10 and 16.xx can cause problems with sound. Sorry I canâÂÂt be more specific but I have long since ditched Fireox because it also constantly crashes on me even with cache relocated to RAM

Thanks Emily. I doubt if those steps will work as I've tried them in the past with older versions of Ubuntu and I've always fell flat on my face. But it doesn't hurt to try. Thanks again!

No problem. Again, sorry I didn't have anything better for you. One thing I just realized that maybe you want to check is under the Configuration tab in pavucontrol there is a profile option where you can select Analog (instead of Digital). Have you looked there?

The device in the manager shows as: Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Built-in Audio
Profile: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output
I noticed that in past installs of Ubuntu, (12, 14, and 16) I noticed the sound device would be an analog device. I noticed once I updated the system, if it went to digital as shown above, the sound dies and I cannot recover.
I've installed PulseAudio, which did not help.
Anyone have any suggestions?
