  • `apt-get update` cannot find Ubuntu servers

  • How to install software or upgrade from an old unsupported release?

    9 answers

I wiped my old unresponsive version and re-installed using my old boot USB. It prompted an upgrade, but eventually gave me the following error:

Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/pam/libpam-modules_1.1.8-3.2ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
Could not resolve 'us.archive.ubuntu.com'

When I check for support status, I get this:

$ ubuntu-support-status
Support status summary of 'robert-VPCEE21FX':

You have 1889 packages (99.9%) that can not/no-longer be downloaded
You have 2 packages (0.1%) that are unsupported

I only understand a few basic Linux commands, so please include proper syntax if you have suggestions for how I can fix this. I was under the impression that my system should only run 32 bit, though it currently shows 64 bit. Here is what I have:

  • Memory: 2.7 GiB

  • Processor AMD Athlon (TM) II P320 Dual-Core Processor x2

  • Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880

  • OS type 64-bit

  • Disc 983.4 GB
