Locking together sound output device and volume slider

In Ubuntu 16.04, sometimes I experience the volume slider changing the volume of the in-built laptop speakers, even though sound is playing through plugged in headphones that run through a DAC (basically a USB soundcard).

Is it possible to lock the volume slider to always adjust the current output device (e.g. the headphones, if they are plugged in and chosen as current output device)?
