Kubuntu 18.04 Black Screen + movable cursor

Anytime I attempt to move a large amount of files from my external hard drive to my internal ssd using the dolphin file manager it will move ~20-40% of the files before the screen goes black and I'm only left with a movable cursor.

This also happens when I delete large files from my external hard drive.

I tried zipping the files before moving them, thinking that it will fix the problem, but the problem still persists.

I don't know if it matters but I'm using a WD passport as the external hard drive.

Anything can help, Thanks!

  • Would be helpful if you add the following info to the question: 1. Hardware specs, including video card and output of free. 2. What happens if you try copying files with cp or rsync? 3. Have similar problems ever occurred in situations other than copying files? 4. Are you using Wayland or X.org?

  • When the problem occurs, try switching to a virtual console and back to see if the GUI is restored:

    Control + Alt + F2 (pause)

    Control + Alt + F1 (or Control + Alt + F7)

  • Try clicking and dragging where you know a window should be to see if the display updates.

  • Try changing compositing settings:

System Settings | Display and Monitor | Compositor

Try different combinations of rendering backends, vsync options, and disabling compositor entirely. Change one setting at a time to identify the specific setting that is causing problems.

  • Other options to be added as more information about the problem becomes available...
