Steam client login when using prime-select intel freezes computer

I've been setting up a MSI gaming laptop (gl72m-7rdx) and I've worked out a few kinks along the way, usually related to video (16.04 would freeze when lightdm started if "prime-select intel" had been run, switching to 17.10 seems to have fixed this problem). However, the (seemingly ;) ) last fly in the ointment is with the steam client. When I try to run the steam client while using the Intel card the system freezes hard, and requires me to power it off and back on again.



I see that there's someone with a similar question last November (ubuntu 16.10 (fresh install) system freezes on "Connecting Steam account: [name]"). Has anyone else seen this?
