(CLOSED BUT NOT RESOLVED) Ubuntu MATE 16.04 x64 freezes when entering login password

Everything boots up as normal but when I am prompted to enter my password at the login screen, pressing any key causes my laptop to hang completely - the mouse freezes, clock freezes, everything freezes. The fans ramp up a bit in speed but that's all that happens. The battery charging light also remains on and it makes a buzzing noise whilst powered off, but only when plugged in. Overall I'm rather concerned. Is there a way to bypass this login screen to attempt to continue using my computer as normal? I know what the date is but please take my question seriously.
Edit: Hovering over anything at the top bar on the login screen or using console login also causes it to freeze.
Edit 2: Shutting down, booting without going via the GRUB menu or logging in with the touchpad active all cause it to freeze. Additional information is in the comment chain.
Edit 3: Okay, so going via the GRUB menu doesn't make it not freeze 100% of the time at all, with it often freezing whilst I'm typing my password or while it is logging in. I really don't know where to begin debugging this. Anyone?
Edit 4: Disabling WiFi or running on battery power does not help. RAM seems in good shape. Hard drive has no bad sectors. Been trying to get in for about half an hour today so I think things are worsening. Ought to try using an external keyboard but I don't have one handy and can't see it being much help. PS/2 isn't an option.
Edit 5: Not shutting down my computer and instead putting it into sleep mode seems like a good solution, for anyone else having the same sort of trouble. It's hardly ideal, but this isn't Windows we're talking about so infrequent reboots aren't an issue.
Edit 6: I'm not sure if this issue ever resolved itself since I actively avoided the risk of running into it, but further system updates have caused more issues, the current big one being my mouse cursor running at a low frame rate, videos being jittery and out of sync in all players, and more graphical problems along those lines which changing my window manager does not resolve. Using a different user profile does function as a workaround, but with Ubuntu 18.04 here, I think I'll just do a fresh install. Consider this question closed.
Edit 7: Alright, so this is pretty much off-topic by this point, but a fresh install of 18.04 did not resolve the mouse and video issues a recent 16.04 update introduced.

Too broad. What is the model of your laptop? Do you have installed all upgrades? Do you have freeze if you do console login (Ctrl+Alt+F1
)?

@N0rbert Laptop is from PCSpecialist. Ubuntu might be a couple months out of date. It freezes immediately when attempting the console login.

You may have bad RAM or something hardware-related. Did you try to boot Windows or any Ubuntu LiveCD on this laptop? Did you try to launch Memtest86+ from GRUB? Reboot your machine, pressShift
to enter GRUB then selectMemory test (memtest86+)
and wait it to finish one or more passes. What video card and driver do you have?

I'll update the system later today, although I don't see why an outdated OS would cause freezes out of the blue. For now I'll just leave it be. If it turns out holding shift during startup is the key to it not freezing for whatever reason, I'm content with that. I'll update this with news on if the freezing continues or just seems to resolve itself.

@N0rbert I've completed one pass of Memtest with no errors and updated Ubuntu. The login freezes still occur. I've discovered that hitting Esc when shutting down to view what's going on behind the scenes freezes my computer. Strangely enough, booting from the GRUB menu does indeed cause it not to freeze at the login screen so I guess I'll use this as a workaround. Entering my password at the lock screen doesn't cause this. Thanks for the help.
