Login problem after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04

I have upgraded my system from 14.04 to 16.04, then after rebooting the system, it is not showing the login page but instead a tty1 terminal asking for login and password, but not logging in.
Searching the forum tried the options ctrl+Alt+F1-F9 but none of them are working.
I tried to enter recovery mode but it is again returning to the tty1 window without showing recovery options.
I tried using live cd but it is asking for installation but repair or upgrade.
Can anyone suggest an idea to get past this without loss of data or installed packages?

Did you try boot from Live, chroot [url: points 7 - 11 help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#via_ChRoot ] to your updated OS and change (reset) password for account (after chroot use passwd for known accout)?
