Login problem after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04

I have upgraded my system from 14.04 to 16.04, then after rebooting the system, it is not showing the login page but instead a tty1 terminal asking for login and password, but not logging in.

Searching the forum tried the options ctrl+Alt+F1-F9 but none of them are working.

I tried to enter recovery mode but it is again returning to the tty1 window without showing recovery options.

I tried using live cd but it is asking for installation but repair or upgrade.

Can anyone suggest an idea to get past this without loss of data or installed packages?

  • Did you try boot from Live, chroot [url: points 7 - 11 help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#via_ChRoot ] to your updated OS and change (reset) password for account (after chroot use passwd for known accout)?
