Login hangs after entering password

For unclear reasons a normal boot sequence will hang, yet editing GRUB after POST gives a login.
However, the login only hangs. I can enter the user and password, but never get a welcome message. I've gone so far as to boot into rescue mode just to create a new user.
I was able to boot into the system a few hours ago but now it just hangs and freezes. (The magic keys REISUB aren't having effect for these boot problems, so I'm pressing and holding the power button...which might be introducing instability.)
