Regular booting suddenly stopped working, so I tried modifying GRUB to boot to text mode. The only way to boot at all was to update GRUB to:

Since that doesn't work, even after running update-grub I somewhat randomly hit on appending text $vt_handoff by editing the GRUB entry in the boot menu. Which boots me to a graphical login.

This is the only sequence which works. How do I add the above commands automatically to the GRUB entries?

(Actually, it stopped working. But it was booting with this approach.)
