Xubuntu 16.04 freezing with 8-10 tabs FF

Running 16.04.3 from a 16GB USB stick (rufus) on a Lenovo Ideapad 110S 32/2 GB.
Runs fine initially with FF only, but as soon as I get several (8-10) tabs open it freezes completely.
I had specifically chosen Xubuntu 16.04 as a stable, low footprint linux; should I be using something earlier/else ?

Have you set up swap?swapon
will show. If not, you're running out of memory.

Sound like too much demand on too few resources to me. You might get better results installing it to the 32 GB SSD. Are you using the USB3 or one of the USB2 interfaces?
