Wifi hotspot doesnt work reliably - how to diagnose?

With 16.04 creating a wifi hotspot on my laptop worked flawlessly. I have now moved on to 17.10 (fresh install), and suddenly wifi hotspot doesnt work anymore.
When I connect my smartphone, authentication succeeds, but I get "checking internet availability..." or something and then "internet may not be available". And indeed - it isnt available.
Now, sometime it does work. Very rarely. But it's def. possible from the hardware. I have been unable to identify what influences this though.
What are my options here?
