I just upgraded from 17.04 to 17.10 but somehow even though I cleared enough root directory space to allow the upgrade, by the end of it my root directory showed 0 bytes remaining and the upgrade cancelled just before the cleaning and rebooting processes occurred. That's the backstory.

Now, I want to complete the upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04. My root directory only has 300 MB available right now. The upgrade to 17.10 required 2.9 GB in the root directory, so I want to know how much I need to upgrade to 18.04, and if possible and if not too off-topic, any suggestions to clear the root directory since I've tried a couple of other suggestions found on ubuntu/linux forums.

Thanks.
