I had been using PuTTY to log into my Ubuntu server for quite some time but it stopped working suddenly. I can still ssh into it from another Linux computer's terminal and from an app on my phone. It's only when trying to use PuTTY that I am having problems. I have open SSH installed as well as fail2Ban.

This is what I receive after trying to connect for about 15 seconds

We need more information. Please add -vvvv option when you try to ssh from Windows and copy and paste the output into your original question above. Unless we see the exact error message, we won't know why it stopped working.

  • Check whether Fail2Ban isn't blocking the IP of the Windows machine.

  • Can you ping the ubuntu server from the windows workstation? If so, what happens if you telnet to port 22 (you should get a protocol mismatch error)?
