16.04: Headphones stop working after pausing, but only when on battery power

Usually my laptop lives on my docking station when I'm at work, but sometimes I work somewhere besides my office. I have noticed that:
- usually when I start listening to music for the first time it comes on fine
- for YouTube, when I pause the music and then resume (and I'm on battery power) it will not come back on
- for other music players, I do not recall if it happens from pause, or from totally stopping playback
- unplugging and replugging the headjack does not fix it
- when my laptop is plugged in via power cord or docking station I can pause and resume at will, no problem
- usually closing the laptop lid and re-opening fixes it, but right now no dice
I strongly suspect that there's a systemd resume script that's not being run, but I haven't the faintest idea where I'd start with that as I'm not a systemd power user.
