I am running an Ubuntu 17.10 dualboot with Windows 10. The other day when I went to start Ubuntu, I was taken to the GRUB rescue terminal, and I could not get Ubuntu to boot. I suspect that something may have happened during an update, but I do not remember shutting off my laptop, etc. I have tried numerous proposed solutions to no avail; my personal files are intact, but it seems that something is wrong with the boot image.

Things I have tried:

  1. Booting with commands from GRUB rescue terminal

    • I was able to locate the partition, but get the message:
      "Error reading segment ..."

  2. Booting demo Ubuntu w/ drive, then Boot-Repair

    • Appears to be outdated for Ubuntu 17.10 ("Cannot find package")

  3. Booting demo Ubuntu w/ drive, then mounting the Linux partition,
    chroot /mnt, then running grub-install

    • "grub-install: error: failed to get canonical path of /boot/grub"

  4. Trying grub-install without chroot

    • "Cannot access 'boot': Bad message"

Is there no way to simply copy installation files? Am I just SOL and will have to reinstall and reconfigure Ubuntu? Please let me know if I can provide more information. I've been banging my head against a wall for days now.

  • May be best to see details, you can run from your Ubuntu live installer or any working install, use ppa version not older Boot-Repair ISO: Post the link to the Create BootInfo summary report. Is part of Boot-Repair: help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Info and: sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair/home/Home
