Sudden freeze and log out

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 and am having some reoccurring issues. Occasionally when I am working on something (seems to be independent of software), my laptop freezes and then logs out. When I log back in, all the processes have been killed (all progress lost, pretty annoying :( ).
On other occasions the screen suddenly goes black and the laptop becomes unresponsive (the lights under the keyboard do respond to certain buttons). Only when I keep the power button down it will turn off and I can restart it.
What might be related is that I sometimes get a pop-up saying the "The application ibus preferences has closed unexpectedly". After which I click relaunch and don't notice anything strange.
The laptop is a HP elitebook and I also have a windows 10 partition on the laptop.
