Having installed Ubuntu 14.04.4 I am unable to login due to the login error discussed here: ubuntu 14.04 login loop problem.
But as I also do not have functioning network for Ubuntu 14.04 thus I cannot apply any of the solutions.
By going into recovery an dropping to a root menu I am able to access the terminal, once there I can carry out
lshw -c network
It reveales that my Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Listed in my network output as Qualcomm Atheros Device) is unclaimed.
I followed the commands from post #2 of this thread: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2350778
modprobe alx
echo 1969 e0b1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/alx/new_id
And following a repeat of lshw -c network showed that the Atheros Qualcom was disabled.
I then issued:
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
and lshw -c network list the device without any tag (Neither Unclaimed nor Disabled) but I still cannot use the apt-get install commands as the internet is apparently still not working.
Lastly attempting
sudo nm-tool
returns
Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
