Network simulator choice for security analysis

I'm about to start a little research project aimed at testing various attacks and vulnerabilities on little networks. My issue is the choice of the right network simulator (e.g. Mininet) to use, because searching around I found myself overwhelmed by the big range of possibilities, each of them having pros and cons. The software I am looking for has the following features:

  • has to manage just few hosts (often 2 hosts + an attacker host + a gateway)

  • hosts are able to run shell commands(virtual machines can be added to the topology, e.g. an attacker using ettercap or 2 hosts setting up a TLS channel)

  • other components: firewall

  • is intuitive and easy to use

On a last note I'm fluent programming in C, C++ and Java, so something using this languages would be better (but this is not a strict requirement). So, do you have any suggestions?

Thank you all in advance.
