  • Black Screen on upgrading from Ubuntu 15.04 to 16.04 LTS

  • My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

    32 answers

With Ubuntu 17.10, my computer boots to a black screen. Then I need to put the computer to hibernate, either by closing and opening the lid or pressing the start switch to make it hibernate and then press it again.

I've been facing this problem ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04, and this continued even after I moved further up to 16.04. However, I did not get any response to either post that could help solve the problem - except to use nomodeset, which as I have pointed out in the second post, is not really a solution.

Hardware details: My machine is a HP Pavilion g6 with AMD Quad-Core A6-3420M with Radeon 6520G graphics card

Graphics Card details:

thomas@thomas-ubuntu:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek [Radeon HD 6520G] [1002:9647]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] [1002:6760] (rev ff)

thomas@thomas-ubuntu:~$ glxinfo | grep -i openGL
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: AMD SUMO (DRM 2.50.0 / 4.13.0-32-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 17.2.2
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.0 Mesa 17.2.2
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.00

It is possible that my hardware represents a corner case but I'm sure there are many more users like me. Ubuntu would not be a low cost solution for me if I am forced to upgrade my hardware. However, for the past three years, it appears that Ubuntu is not interested in looking at this issue. I hope at least in 18.04 there will be some good news for me!

  • Can you check if increasing the brightness fixes your "black screen" issue? I had a similar issue on a laptop recently, and suspend/resume would often fix it as well.
