Why do I have to reboot modem after suspend or restart?

I'm brand spanking new to Ubuntu and the command-line. Just installed Ubuntu LTS 16.04.4 (dual-boot with Windows) today after taking it for a spin with booting from USB drive. But, alas, I'm having the same problem I was having with the test-drive, which is that I lose the ability to connect to WiFi after my computer goes into sleep/hibernate (those are the same thing, right?) OR after restarting. Wi-Fi Networks says I'm connected but when I ping 8.8.8.8 (one of the few commands I know), there is 100% packet loss and if I ping www.google.com it doesn't even recognize it. The only solution has been to reboot the modem. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 15 with a ZyXel PK5001 modem. When I typed "sudo lshw -class network" (per this post)into the terminal, I get this:
sudo lshw -class network
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter
vendor: Qualcomm Atheros
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0

version: 01
serial: 90:cd:b6:3a:b6:bd
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list rom ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath9k driverversion=4.13.0-43-generic firmware=N/A ip=192.168.0.53 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11
resources: irq:16 memory:91200000-9127ffff memory:91280000-9128ffff
I've seen a few posts in searching with a similar problem but the answers are a bit beyond my current skill-set. I'm not a technophobe but I'm not a technophile either. At least not yet. I've got a ton of links that I've bookmarked (thanks to the newbie section) as well as some books from the library. But learning takes time. Right n
ow I need step by step instructions if I need to code anything in bash.
Thanks so much!
