My Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with 8GiB DDR3 RAM is working very slow. Swap size is 8GiB. Always I open 1 chrome browser (with 10-11tabs). And one Simple IDE (Visual Studio Code).

  • If you run system monitor, what does it show for the highest usage of %CPU and for Memory? Also, what does free -h show?

  • Memory - 7.5 from 7.7. Cpu - 15%, 5%, 13%, 6% (4 cores)

  • Do you mean 7.5G out of 7.7G of available memory is being used? If so, next look for what is using so much memory. If it is a program that just uses a lot of RAM, then you need more memory. If it is something that shouldn't be using that much, then that process or processes need to be looked into.

  • Visual Studio Code is not simple IDE. It is modern glossy slow Electron-based IDE. Simple IDEs are Geany, CodeBlocks or something other lightweight. And of course you should run gnome-system-monitor or htop to determine RAM usage.
