from this index page of Brother Linux Support http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/index.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&comple=on&redirect=on
one can access the FAQ page for scanners http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/faq_scn.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on
3 things to check on:
1) http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/faq_scn.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on#f00107 check libusb-0.1-4 is installed .. even if networked! Install with sudo apt install libusb-0.1-4
2) http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/faq_scn.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on#f00101 Copy the specified files under /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib/. Hint: your device is brscan4
so
sudo sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1.0.7 /usr/lib/sane
sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so /usr/lib/sane
sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1 /usr/lib/sane
3) if usb-connected; needs udev rule
if networked, check all here http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1b.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on
....... yes, it could all be a lot simpler ..

1) http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/faq_scn.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on#f00107 check libusb-0.1-4 is installed .. even if networked! Install with sudo apt install libusb-0.1-4
2) http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/faq_scn.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on#f00101 Copy the specified files under /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib/. Hint: your device is brscan4
so
sudo sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1.0.7 /usr/lib/sane
sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so /usr/lib/sane
sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1 /usr/lib/sane
3) if usb-connected; needs udev rule
if networked, check all here http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1b.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on
....... yes, it could all be a lot simpler ..
