I installed the wordpress app on my system and then tried to do an upgrade and this error comes up with anything I enter into the terminal.

E: The package wordpress.com needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Why can't your system find the package you used to install, or the source it came from? How, exactly, did you install Wordpress?

  • I used the manual install for .deb package and installed via the software install. No idea why this has happened.

  • What is the output of apt policy wordpress? (Mind you, this may turn up an older version of Wordpress that it is not recommended to install.)

  • wordpress: Installed: (none) Candidate: 4.4.2+dfsg-1ubuntu1 Version table: 4.4.2+dfsg-1ubuntu1 500 500 zw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages 500 zw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe i386 Packages

  • The reason apt did not find an archive may have been that zw.archive.ubuntu.com was not available at the time. Try again, perhaps ping the server, or change to a different mirror. However, this will still install version 4.4.2 which is a bit old, and in any case Wordpress consists of text files only. Just download the .zip file and unzip it to a directory on your website.
