Screen is scrambled when plugging in second monitor

When my laptop wakes up from sleep, and I plug in a second monitor, the laptop monitor goes completely black, and the second monitor goes scrambled. See this 5 second video for an example.
This usually means I have to hard-reset by holding the power button.
As a slight variation, when I login first before plugging in the monitor, the same thing happens, but can be solved by moving the mouse from the external monitor to the laptop monitor. The moment the cursor touches the laptop screen, both screens start working in the expected fashion.
When the second monitor is plugged in from a cold boot, there's no issue.
Details about my machine:
- Asus UX550V
- Ubuntu 17.10
- Gnome 3.26.2
- Nvidia 384.111 drivers on GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2
It's been doing this ever since I've been using Gnome and Ubuntu 17.10. On 16.04 this particular issue was not there.
