No menus, just desktop icons on boot

I have Ubuntu 16.04.
This morning, when I booted, I could only see my desktop icons. There was no sidebar or any menus.
I am able to open a terminal.
The only think that I can think of that I have changed since the computer was last fine is:
I was trying to write some code that would interact with my gmail account to have it work, I switched the "Allow less secure apps" option on my google account to "on".
I think it might be related, because when I first booted this morning, there was also a "Chrome has closed unexpectedly" box.
Any ideas how I can fix the problem would be appreciated.
EDIT:
I opened Chrome from my terminal and have switched the Allow less secure apps" to "off" and restarted. The problem persists, so may not be related.
Also, my screen resolution has changed to that everything is really small. It may just be that I can't see the menus because of this.
I usually have 1920 x 1080 I believe. Can I change this on terminal to check?
I guess it's more than the screen resolution, because if I try to print screen or bring up the search panel using keyboard shortcuts, they don't work.
