Ubuntu 16.04 doesn't shut down the normal way

When I try to shutdown using normal method i.e. clicking on the upper right side and then clicking shutdown, the machine doesn't shutdown rather it locks the computer and brings me back to the login screen. The only way I can shutdown my machine is by using the command "shutdown now".
Anyone who can tell me what the problem is and how to tackle it?
