Lenovo T400 Fingerprint Reader not working

I have an old Lenovo T400 with AES2810 which works intermittently. It would stop working randomly. I've tried updating the packages, re-installed Ubuntu 16.04 couple of times without any luck. The hardware itself is listed as compatible on https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint
It is fully functional on Win7. Any help getting this setup would be much appreciated.
