Ubuntu 17.10, but was happening on earlier version too.
I've done a completely fresh installation and version upgrade, as my attempt to fix this issue.
When I boot the computer, Ubuntu loads fine, and tries to connect to the network. Sometimes it works, and connects very quickly (within 5-10 seconds) - but usually it tries to connect for a long time before giving up.
I can manually tell it to stop connecting and to try and connect, but that doesn't seem to make a difference - if it failed the first attempt it also fails on the next attempt.
The only thing that seems to work is rebooting the computer.
It connects correctly maybe 1-in-4 times. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating.
Right now, I'm submitting from my Ubuntu computer, so when it works it clearly is working correctly.
I know the basics of networking and using Ubuntu and can run command line instructions.
Both IPv4 and IPv6 are set to automatic.
On my previous Ubuntu installation, I ran ifconfig, I got the following results
When NOT working:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 78:ac:c0:c1:90:e0
inet6 addr: fe80::7ef7:33cb:aa46:d1e8/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:551 errors:0 dropped:4 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:557 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:47311 (47.3 KB) TX bytes:103806 (103.8 KB)
Interrupt:17
When working:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 78:ac:c0:c1:90:e0
inet addr:192.168.0.14 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::7ef7:33cb:aa46:d1e8/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:53 errors:0 dropped:1 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:87 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:7855 (7.8 KB) TX bytes:27857 (27.8 KB)
Interrupt:17
... so it looks like it's not getting an inet addr on the occasions when it's not working. (Which doesn't seem like a surprise...) - but I've got no idea why it sometimes works and other times doesn't.
Any suggestions on what to try next?
