I decided to install Ubuntu to my 10 year old laptop. After installation, I got a blank screen with a blinking underscore. After some searching online, I tried forcing GRUB to load the menu. I only got a message that GRUB was loading, with the same blinking underscore on the next line.

Later on, I tried Lubuntu, another distro. Same thing as before. The Super GRUB2 Disk I found also didn't work. Is there any way to replace or remove GRUB as a boot loader altogether?

I still have the Live CDs on me and can boot into them without any issue.

I want to say that this is my first time installing any form of Linux on a physical PC, and only have few experience with how to work around it.

If a 10 year old laptop, it is BIOS, not UEFI. How much RAM? Often Lubuntu or other lightweight flavor of Ubuntu works better on systems with less than 2TB of RAM. What video card/chip? Some need boot parameters. May be best to see details, you can run from your Ubuntu live installer or any working install, use ppa version not older Boot-Repair ISO: Post the link to the Create BootInfo summary report.
