laptop not shutting down (black screen with flashing stripe)

like the title suggests, when i shutdown my laptop (using the menu on the top right) is goes to a black screen with a flashing stripe.
in some occasions it also displays "@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@".
the only way for me to then shut down my laptop is to keep the power button pressed for 10sec.
if someone could help that would be great, thanks in advance
P.S it is a dual boot system
