Trying to install rEFIt to dual boot Ubuntu on Mac but no luck

I've successfully installed Ubuntu on a partition of my Mac, and I'm trying to use rEFIt so I'm presented with the option to choose between Ubuntu and OSX when I restart. I've gotten it to the point where I can get a menu only if I hold down the Option key when I restart, otherwise it boots into Ubuntu. I have tried to click on the rEFIt icon to install and I have manually installed in Terminal, both followed by at least 3 restarts.
Could someone help me troubleshoot? Here are my Mac's specs:
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009)
- Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
- Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
- SSD Installed
Also, when I do hold down the Option key and get the rEFIt menu, I see all these options for Ubuntu. Is this normal/how it should be? I am very new at this.

Development onrEFIt
has been abandoned in 2010, but it was forked in 2012 asrEFInd
and continues active development. May be you should use rEFInd instead.
