Sending instructions to a raspberry pi without ssh

I wonder how to ask my RaspberryPi to download a file without using SSH. When I use SSH I cannot log out until the file has been retrieved. There is a way to send instructions to my RaspberryPi using a different way ? And so any others commands I guess.
