GNOME custom fractional scaling

I know about the experimental fractional scaling feature for Wayland, but my screen DPI is awkward in that even the jump from 100% to 125% is too great a difference. At 100% fonts look fine but some other UI elements look too small. I was wondering whether there is any way (Wayland or X11) to get higher granularity scaling without distorting fonts? No matter what settings I use in gnome-tweaks I can't get it just right. Thanks!
