I downloaded Synaptic onto my Ubuntu 17.10 desktop. The app gives a list of suggested dependencies to download. Not knowing what I was doing, I downloaded all of them.
When I reboot the computer, I get a different login screen than usual:
When I enter in my password it takes me to this screen:
I then get this message:
How do I install all the shell packages, and how do I know which ones I need? I've tried to enter the GRUB menu my pressing shift during the start-up, but that doesn't work. This makes me unable to get to a terminal at all.
If anyone can help me fix this problem, I'd appreciate it. Thank you, in advance.

Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to access a terminal once in graphical mode. CTRL-ALT-F8 back to graphical mode (F# may vary depending on flavor of linux)
