Get repeating letters into text fields when using Ctrl-w in chrome or other apps

Sometimes when I close a tab in chrome, or other apps and a focus is on a text field, an endless stream of 'wwwwwwwwwwwww...' until I type something in the keyboard to stop it. This has only occurred in my ubuntu installs. I'm on ubuntu 17.10 and here is my kernel info
