Boot-repair in legacy mode

My system wont boot ubuntu from any external drive (CD, USB). It actually wont even boot ubuntu from any internal drive (HD, SSD). See Update firmware bug ubuntu LIVE and How to set mount point of boot partition to /boot/efi?

The only way I find to boot ubuntu LIVE from a USB is changing UEFI to Legacy mode. I can then try Ubuntu without installing, and also install Ubuntu.

Selecting install and erase everything does the usual installation procedure, and after hitting restart, nothing has changed (old OS still there, nothing boots).

So I run boot-repair from ubuntu on the USB, only to find out that it only works in UEFI. If I change to UEFI though, I wont be able to boot from the USB.

Any ideas?

  • If USB flash drive correctly configured, your system should offer to boot it, even if Secure Boot is on. But you may have to turn on allow USB boot setting. What brand/model system?
