After Ubuntu 16.04 LTS update, xterm displays only a white solid square (all text invisible)

Updated Ubuntu 16.04 using 'Ubuntu Software/Updates' and then immediately after, opened xterm to find only a single white square as a cursor and no other text visible. Looks like I can type in (invisible) commands but all text is invisible so no matter what I do, all that is ever visible is a white square. For what it's worth, UXterm and GNU Emacs 24 (terminal) are also displaying nothing but a white square.

What did the update clobber and how do I get back to having visible characters in my terminals?

Any help greatly appreciated - thanks.
