An error occurred while performing the step: âBuilding kernel modulesâ

I am trying to install these drivers on ubuntu 16.04.
However, every time I try to install I get the message:
An error occurred while performing the step: "Building kernel modules". See /var/log/nvidia-installer.log for details
Followed by:
ERROR: An error occurred while performing the step: "Checking to see whether the nvidia-uvm kernel module was successfully built". See /var/log/nvidia-installer.log for details.
After which it tells me the kernel module installation has failed an driver installation has failed.
I am planning to use this GPU for eth mining so need to keep CUDA enabled i believe, rather than using the '--no-unified-memory' option. How do I fix this?

This is actually about nvidia kernel modules and not about ubuntu. Also have you read the log ? I've just glanced over it and in the first 10 lines there is/usr/lib/nvidia/pre-install
followed byThe distribution-provided pre-install script failed!
- so I would start with looking into that first,... Also, I'm not farmiliar with the specifics of the Nvidia drivers, but why not use binaries like from appa
?

ah, yeah, i dont know much about this while thing tbh, so when i saw kernel i just assumed it was an ubuntu thing, if i should move the post i will. Ill take a look at the pre install script, thanks. I don't know what a ppa is though, and the guide site im using to set this all up linked me to those nvidia drivers

So is there a particular reason why you won't use a ppa ?

there isnt, and having looked at what they are it looks like thats probably the way to go, thanks. Though i cant try it right now as the pc is at a friends house, and i am not, but will attempt it tomorrow.

Its not a solution, but a workaround for your issue, I believe
