I have an HP all-in-one desktop with the AMD64 chip. When I installed Ubuntu 16.04 to replace windows, the installation failed to boot. How do I overcome this problem? I am waiting for the new 18.04 so that I can get it on both my pc and laptop.

The failed installation above was done with 16.04. This time, I followed the same procedure of using rufus to make a bootable USB. First, though it is necessary to turn off windows fast start option. After turning off the computer, the USB was inserted and the pc turned back on. The installation of 18.04 to replace windows was flawless. Near as I could tell, the 16.04 did not install grub2 whereas the 18.04 did.

  • What steps did you follow, and what did you see during the non-boot stage?

  • What program did you use to mount the iso? If it was unetbootin try something else (sometimes unetbootin misbehaves), like rufus or etcher.

  • Used rufus to create a bootable usb, bootable, and chose "replace windows" option. I did what appeared to be a normal installation, but when the pc was turned off and the usb removed, ubuntu wold not boot.
