Here's the edited version of my post. In the meantime I had to re-install ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS and I also reinstalled the wireless USB dongle's drivers. So, it works. enter image description here This is what iconfig shows.
The reason, I believe it stopped working in the first place is probably I corrupted the driver while doing updates (for other stuff) in the meantime.
I still have a problem though: The wifi doesn't get connected automatically when I restart the computer even though I indicated in the settings to automatically reconnect to my wifi, I need to go manually to connect and re-enter the WPA password.

As far as the wired ethernet connection goes, it simply doesn't connect. Unfortunately, the router is downstairs and my office is in the den, so it is very painful to take the whole PC back and forth. This is a desktop.

  • Let's start by identifying the USB wireless. Please edit your question to add the result of the terminal commands: lsusb and also: lsmod | grep rtl Welcome to Ask Ubuntu.

  • Did you check whether it worked before installing any drivers?

  • The wifi usb dongle worked on windows 10 plug and play. After ubuntu install it wasn't recognized until I installed the driver. It then worked for a few hours.

  • Please edit your question instead of burying important information in comments. Please elaborate on "it worked for a few hours"
