Rescuing an old laptop by replacing unreliable onboard wifi with USB Wifi.

I want to at least temporarily connect both the onboard and usb interfaces to the LAN wifi router.

Is this possible?

I see that people often connect interfaces to different networks but I am trying to connect them to the same network.

Using netplan I have assigned static ip addresses for these devices and these are successfully assigned. Network manager is working with the onboard device.

Using wpa_cli I have configured the USB device so that its status as reported by wpa_cli is identical to the onboard interface - except for the addresses.

bssid=1c:ab:c0:b2:61:c8
freq=0
ssid=myssid
id=0
mode=station
pairwise_cipher=CCMP
group_cipher=TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA2-PSK
wpa_state=COMPLETED
ip_address=DIFFERENT
address=DIFFERENT
uuid=76d41501-142d-5951-8412-b2dfc2162ff1

The onboard communicates as expected, but the USB cannot ping out. The USB will accept connections (ping and ssh).

I tried adding the USB as the default route. This worked for web browsing but failed for eg. apt update.

wpa_cli FAILs the attempt to save the configuration but gives no more information even with log_level set to debug.
