The link below is a similar but opposite to my problem: https://askubuntu.com/questions/561127/ctrl-alt-t-opens-root-terminal-instead-of-normal-terminal
Post installation of 16.04 LTS, and installation of terminator, I launched the terminator-terminal and then locked it to my Launcher bar. All was good until a Software Update manager update today. Now the icon launches a root user terminal, requiring password. Launching a non-root user terminal still works via short-cut ctrl-alt-t. I removed the icon from the Launcher bar, launched the terminal and re-attached it to the Launcher bar and received the same result. Some configuration file update is causing this. But which one and how?
/usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator
Appears correct. Launching it does not prompt for password, and its configured to launch the alternate terminator terminal vs. gnome-terminal. Verified that terminator is launched when run.
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/terminator:terminator.desktop looks ok?
[Desktop Entry]
X-AppInstall-Package=terminator
X-AppInstall-Popcon=643
X-AppInstall-Section=universe
Name=Terminator
Comment=Multiple terminals in one window
TryExec=terminator
Exec=terminator
Icon=terminator
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility;TerminalEmulator;System;
StartupNotify=true
X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts=NewWindow;
Keywords=terminal;shell;prompt;command;commandline;
[NewWindow Shortcut Group]
Name=Open a New Window
Exec=terminator
TargetEnvironment=Unity
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=app-install-data
So what's driving the root user launch of terminator when launched from Launcher icon? Note: I checked and none of the other apps in Launcher are being launched as root, no password prompt and no permissions to write to '/'.
Thanks
