My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?
32 answers
Well, I got exactly the same problem as a few years ago, when I removed my old 8600 from a system running 12.04. And now I removed 1050 ti. I used proprietary driver, I dont remember what exactly is.
Both systems though were installed before I plugged videos in them, so both should have some basic VGA or Intel Drivers. Why the hell I got the same problem after a long time and all this user friendly smalltalk?
Right now I have no problems in Windows with my Intel HD 4600 drivers...
Id like not to reinstall the whole system each time I plugged off my GPU.
I can use prompt line. FailsafeX is loading and even show some dialogue window but doesn't respond to any m or kb input.
I can bet I will get the same error even in 16.04. Years passing, but this gpu problems are intact.

Can you please edit your question to remove the rude and ranty bits, and describe the exact problem? It's completely unclear what your problem is or what your question is. You should also specify exact model of the video card you removed, and what drivers you were using with it.

Well, for me is obvious the problem in a fact, that I got black screen instead of some GUI. I was not dropped even in a terminal, just black screen. For me it is a big huge problem, indeed. Oh, and question is simple enough - how to get GUI back? And monitor even connected to VGA port on a mobo. And its even work - sadly, only in Windows.

Probably. you're right. Torvalds said: "nvidia, f.. you". The problem is AMD Radeon is worse and Intel HD is not for gaming.

I have no problems at all with my Radeon R9 Nano. It works great with the open source drivers included in Ubuntu 16.04. AMD also works directly on the drivers that go into the kernel and xorg, and are working on pushing even more of the stack that is stil proprietary from their amdgpu-pro drivers, as open source.
