exchange server autodiscovered but rejecting connection

My up-grade to 17.10 blew away my Thunderbird calendar setup. Now as I try to rebuild I can get auto-discover an exchange server but cannot then log in. The organization uses a central password server so the login to the autodiscover server is same password as the exchange server, but it clearly is not accepting my credentials (401, aka code -19). The report exchange server is a real address (ping-able). Since I've had this working in the past I know there's a trick I'm not remembering. Please remind me.
