I just downloaded the very latest ISO for Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS (server), installed it on a KVM VM, launched the VM, did a bog standard apt-get upgrade, and before the upgrade was even complete, it starts to complain that certain binaries no longer work. Rebooting the VM results in a non-working server.

Yesterday, I was using a slightly older version of 16.04 LTS, and got the same results, just with far more packages the upgrade. I figured this would be fixed with a newer ISO. My guess is that the lack of EXTREME EMERGENCY posts to this forum means that it's just my apt source: ca.archive.ubuntu.com.

For reference, this is the output I get from apt-get, right when it hoses the entire system:

You can reproduce this error by downloading the latest Ubuntu 16.04.4 ISO, and installing it with the following options:

• Linux LVM


• Postgres Database package


• OpenSSH server package

Once installed, perform an apt update && apt upgrade. If you really want to see how bad it gets, reboot the server after the upgrade is complete.

I have tried this with and without the LVM set up.
