My HD crashed but was able to access my SpiderOakOne backup data. Now I need to re-stall the application and add my new computer as a new device. I was able to download the appropriate .tgz file and extract it, but get stuck at that point.

Why don't you try installing the .deb instead of the .tgz? Then your package manager can take care of the installation process.

OK. I downloaded and extracted the .deb. I can't see it in Synaptic Package Manager and if just click on the extracted file it starts to open the Ubuntu Software app but keeps on processing - the rotating circle thing - and doesn't do anything else.
