How do I install Ubuntu?

Having no success in trying to install Ubuntu, so I'm hoping someone can tell me where I'm going wrong.
I'm not completely computer illiterate but in truth I do have trouble following some of the replies here to problems when you start using abbreviations etc, what they're referring to and meant to be.
I can follow the published downloading and installation instructions.
First my computer is a spare one I often use to run programs before putting them in my main computer. It started life as a HP desktop but I have renewed / replaced almost everything except the case over the years.
- Gigabyte motherboard GA-M68M-S2P.
- Has a AMD Athlon 11x2 250 3.00GHz processor.
- 3 GB of RAM.
- Hard drive is a SSD 60GB was 25GB free space now after download of Ubuntu 17.10 is 22.5 GB.
It is running quite happily Windows 7 home premium. But I want to try Linux and I think Ubuntu is a nice version for my needs.
Some time ago it was using a 32-bit motherboard. I tried to install Ubuntu with various downloads with no success so I purchased a ready-made installation CD, 14.04.LTS 32-bit. That would not install either. Frustrated I gave in and put it away.
A short time ago I needed to install a new motherboard the Gigabyte board as mentioned above.
Retired now and finding time on my hands I decided to have another go at trying to run Ubuntu.
I first tried the purchased CD knowing it was 32-bit and the system 64-bit just to see, and it did not install.
Then to the website and now have downloaded/burned two DVDs of the 16.04 system and one DVD of 17.10, and all refuse to install. Then I made a USB drive 16.04 using Rufus this will not install either.
Altered the first boot in the BIOS to suit whatever device I am using to install. Apart from first boot from a CD there are three USB options, USB FDD, ZIP and CD-Rom, I have tried all three.
These symptoms apply to all the downloads mentioned above.
On some attempts I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. But most times it will run to the purple screen with the small icons at the bottom, that would change to a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
Then I came across an article saying you needed to press enter and choose language then press F6 and alter to nomodeset
or try acpi=off
or nolapic
. I have tried all the options in that dialogue box and the only one that will move the installation on is acpi=off
. I then get the screen with the options
Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
test hard drive
etc.
I have tried both the Try without installing and install, I have never seen the various dialogue boxes depicted in the installation instructions or the option to install alongside which would be my preferred choice at the moment. After choosing the installation the screen goes to purple with 4 dots blinking alternately. This will carry on and switch after some time to a blank screen with a blinking cursor, on one occasion the screen went blank then flashed up some dialogue too fast for me to read but I did get something along the lines, Start unit accounts, lots more, and a green OK in a box.
Once there was dialogue asking for Ubuntu login? Not having one or knowing what it was I had to shut down the computer and start again.
On some attempts it manages to get the installation to open the Ubuntu desktop but there is no input from the mouse or keyboard (both of which are wired USB) requiring me to switch off the computer reboot it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as said earlier I am not conversant with a lot of the computer language but have over the years dating from Windows 95 have managed to install build and get over most problems.
As most people tell me they have no problem and are very happy with their installations I can only conclude I am doing something stupid.

First, does a Ubuntu Live USB drive boot and work correctly when you try running from the device (not installing Ubuntu)? If not, then perhaps Ubuntu cannot find drivers for your current setup. See askubuntu.com/questions/629632/â¦
