Is there a way to change video drivers during the install of xubuntu?

From the start I had problems with installing ubuntu 16.04+ on my ASUS-N501VW laptop because of the incompatibilities of the nvidia integrated graphics and the nouveau driver. The workaround I used the first time was to install ubuntu 15.10, which worked well, and then upgrade to 16.04, change the driver to proprietary, and everything worked.

Now I had some problems with the installation and decided to do a fresh install. I found out that nouveau still does not cooperate well with my graphics...

I was hasty, so I installed an old Wily image from my USB, to find out that I am no longer able to upgrade from it since it is not supported any more. Now I am stuck with ubuntu 15.10 on my box and with an American keyboard instead of Slovenian >:(

I have tried many times to install different Linux distributions, but all hang when they come to connect to the video. It seems to me that the only way out is to use the proprietary (working) driver during install. Can anybody tell me, how to do it, or maybe some other solution for my trouble?
