The following audio device on my ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS motherboard shows it's disabled.

24:00.3 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Device 1457
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 86c7
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 15
Memory at f7700000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=32K]
Capabilities: [48] Vendor Specific Information: Len=08 <?>
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [64] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0001 Rev=1 Len=010 <?>

This occurred because I was trying very awkwardly and unsuccessfully to install Realtek's HD Audio Manager, which apparently doesn't work so well on Linux systems.

How can I get the audio device enabled again?

  • Where did you get Realtek's HD Audio Manager from and how exactly did you install it?

  • I followed instructions to enter code from a website. After I lost the sound, I went to several websites and tried several things to try to get it back. I cannot now find in Downloads or Trash anything resembling HD Audio Manager. However, I do have Rt-Linux-HDaudio5.18 unzipped and I think installed.

  • aplay -l shows no soundcards found. When I check Sound Settings, no output devices are listed, and the output volume is set to 0. I can increase the volume and click on Test Sound, but nothing happens. I can close and reopen Sound Settings, and the output volume has reverted to 0.

  • You could try sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudo then reboot your system to get the default driver back.

  • Sorry, no change. No output device listed in Sound Settings. Volume still 0. Can't test sound.
