I have an HP Envy 4-core-i7, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 840M, driver 384.111, kernel 4.4.

lucas@test:~$ glxinfo | grep -i -E 'nvidia|geforce'
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 840M/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 384.111
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.50 NVIDIA
OpenGL version string: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 384.111
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.50 NVIDIA
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 384.111

lucas@test:~$ uname -a
Linux test 4.4.0-116-generic #140-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 12 21:23:04 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The thing is I'm experiencing very high CPU usage when doing basic stuff. Watching a video over firefox consumes high amount of CPU time. I also do somteimes Matlab or Python3 and the effect is the same.

I've installed netada and after looking at the stats I get to see that X is the process that consumes the most CPU time of all.

  • The following plot is the CPU time while I was writing this post. The fans kept on going meanwhile.
    enter image description here

  • This is the CPU time while playing a video with Firefox.
    enter image description here

  • This is the CPU time with only Firefox open but I was doing nothing (the increment on the right is because of the screenshot).
    enter image description here

I've tried:

  • using the intel GPU;

  • different versions for NVIDIA

... but results are the same: CPU goes high and fans go crazy.

I'd like to know what is it that I need to look for to get some tips of what's going on. Is this an expected behavior? I've installed 16.04 two years ago, but this has happened in the last two months or so (I guess some upgrade has something to do... ).

Any clues anyone?

Thanks!

Lucas
